What is white-label product development, and how does it work?
White-label product development lets a design consultancy deliver engineering and manufacturing capability under its own name. Here’s how it works in practice.
White-label is a familiar idea in many industries: one company does the work, another presents it to the customer under its own brand. In product development, it means a technical partner works behind the scenes on a consultancy’s project, while the consultancy remains the client’s point of contact.
How it works in practice
- You win the project. The client relationship is yours from the start.
- You define what’s needed. Together we agree which parts of the project, such as engineering, DFM, prototyping, supplier selection, or factory audits, we’ll support.
- We work as part of your team. We can operate under your name, use your reporting formats and join client calls in whatever capacity you prefer, including not at all.
- You review and present. The outputs come through you and go to the client under your brand.
- We support through to production. If the project extends to manufacturing, we can manage supplier relationships, quality control and logistics on your behalf.
Why consultancies use it
- It expands what you can offer without permanent hires.
- It reduces risk on projects that go beyond your normal scope.
- It lets you take on larger or more technical work.
- It keeps the client relationship where it belongs.
What to look for in a white-label partner
- Discretion. They should be comfortable staying in the background.
- Real engineering and manufacturing experience. Not just capacity, but knowledge.
- A clear agreement. Confidentiality, ownership of work and communication protocols should be defined up front.
- Compatibility. They should fit your standards, your tools and the way you work.
White-label doesn’t suit every project, and there will be times when a client is happy to know that specialist support is involved. The point is that it’s your call.
